The Gibson Goes to Hornaday
Written by Lindsey Marks

ron-hornadayRon Hornaday earned his first custom Sam Bass Gibson guitar trophy at Nashville Superspeedway in the Camping World Truck Series (CWTS) Toyota Tundra 200.

This was another record breaking victory for Hornaday. Last week he won four races in a row for the first time in CWTS history; Saturday night he broke the record again with five wins in a row. This is the first time anyone in any of NASCAR’s top-three series has won five races in a row since 1971.

Hornaday dominated the race in his #33 Longhorn Chevy Silverado for Kevin Harvick Inc. giving Chevrolet only their second victory at Nashville. The first win came back in 2002 when Mike Bliss took the checkers.

Hornaday’s crew chief, Rick Ren, also made history tonight. Ren is now the winningest crew chief in the Series and Hornaday is the winningest driver with 45 career victories.

“It’s unbelievable,” Ren said. “I told Hornaday there when he took the checkers ‘we both made history here tonight… We race to win.”

On top of all of the records he broke tonight, the highlight of Hornaday’s evening was winning the special Gibson guitar designed by NASCAR artist Sam Bass.

“I finally got the Sam Bass guitar. I finally did it,” Hornaday said in Victory Lane. “Five (victories in a row). Can you believe that? That’s cool.”

Brian Scott finished second in his #16 Toyota tundra. After the race the pride in his run was obvious, but was disappointed about not getting the guitar.

“Everybody wants that Les Paul guitar by Sam Bass,” Scott said. “It’s the coolest trophy out there but tonight wasn’t our night to get it.”

Colin Braun, pole-sitter Timothy Peters, and Matt Crafton finished third, fourth and fifth respectively. Johnny Sauter, Rick Crawford, Dennis Setzer, Tayler Malsam and T.J. Bell rounded out the top-10.

The CWTS has a two-week break in the schedule. The next event will be on August 19th at Bristol Motor Speedway.
