Kevin Harvick Inc. dominated the Lucas Oil 150 as Kevin Harvick took the checkered flag while his driver Ron Hornaday secured the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship.
Harvick’s No. 4 Longhorn Chevrolet managed to hold off fellow Sprint Cup Series regular Kyle Busch despite a late race caution to get the first win in his attempt to win all three NASCAR events this weekend. Hornaday in the No. 33 VFW Silverado finished the race in 4th, four places ahead of Matt Crafton who was second in the series point standings for a total points margin of 215 points which earns him his 4th championship one week before the final race of the season. This is only the second time in Camping World Truck Series history that the championship has been decided prior to the final race.
Hornaday joins Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon as the only drivers to win four or more NASCAR titles. “We’re not done yet, we gotta get that owner’s (championship) for Kevin and Delana (Harvick),” Hornaday said after doing a dual burnout down the front stretch next to Harvick. He also challenged Jack Sprague to return to the Series and go for another championship. Hornaday’s crew chief Rick Ren was mysteriously without his trademark Tums bottle during the race, a sign that he was confident in the team’s performance despite the stressful conditions. “It’s easy to get picked as the pre-season favorites but its hard to live up to those expectations,” Ren said. “I’m gonna tell you what, this is pretty cool.” Harvick was just as excited about the race outcome in Victory Lane after getting a win and seeing his driver win the championship. “I don’t think you could script it much better,” he said. Kevin Harvick Inc. currently leads Billy Ballew Motorsports in the Owner’s championship point standings, a title they still have to race for next weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The Billy Ballew Motorsports drivers Busch and Aric Almirola crossed the finish line 2nd and 3rd behind Harvick. Hornaday came home 4th followed by pole sitter Johnny Sauter. Mike Skinner finished 6th, followed by Mike Bliss, Crafton, David Starr and Stacy Compton. MORE NASCAR NEWS
