NASCAR Camping World Series driver Austin Dillon has a lot of memories of going to the race track with his father Mike, a former Nationwide Series driver, and grandfather Richard Childress.
North Wilkesboro Speedway is a place where many of those memories were made and the 19-year old went back in time Wednesday, taking an opportunity to reminisce while visiting the historical facility to gain seat time in his black No. 3 NASCAR Truck. “It was raining and I got in the van and I got to ride on the top of the telephone books," Dillon recalled of his first laps around the 0.625-mile speedway. "I also watched my dad run here. I actually came out here when they tested here for one of his Late Model races.”
Dillon spent a good part of Wednesday afternoon turning laps at North Wilkesboro, preparing himself and crew chief Danny Stockman for the remainder of the 2010 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series schedule. “We're getting ready to get in a stretch here through the middle of the summer and we need to build that communication fast, so when we get in the middle of it we know what we're talking about,” said Stockman. “I'm trying to understand what he's telling me and he's trying to understand the changes that I'm making. Basically, we're here today [Wednesday] making tons and tons of changes and I want him to feel what they do. This place wears tires out. You get about 40 laps on a set of tires, but that also teaches him to conserve tires.” Wednesday marked the second time in the past four weeks that a RCR team conducted a test session at North Wilkesboro. Kevin Harvick tested there in his No. 29 Sprint Cup car on March 25, 2010. MORE NASCAR NEWS
