Lucky 13 Sauter Gets Second Truck Win

johnny-sauter“That’s how you win races.”

That’s what Johnny Sauter’s crew chief Joe Shear Jr. said over the radio as the No. 13 In Country Television/ “What A Horse”/ Curb Records Chevrolet for ThorSport Racing took the checkered flag in the O’Reilly Auto Parts 250 at Kansas Speedway after an incredibly odd event.

“Spectacular,” Shear said in the post-race interview as Sauter celebrated his victory after the race.

After enduring a thunderstorm complete with hail that brought out red-flag conditions for a while and a late race incident that had both Sauter and Ron Hornaday drifting through turns 3 and 4, Sauter earned his second NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race.

Hornaday made a run to Sauter’s inside for the race lead with only a handful of laps remaining when a lapped truck in front of the pair got Hornaday loose and sent him sliding up the track into the No. 13. Both drivers slid nearly 90 degrees sideways, Sauter made contact with the outside wall and amazingly both recovered and kept going.

“I can’t wait until I see that on tv. That was out of control,” Sauter said after getting out of his truck. “Maybe I’m the man, I don’t know.”

He certainly was and his crew let him know it in Victory Lane with a cake to the face in celebration of not only the win but also Sauter’s birthday which was yesterday.

“I said Look out Johnny here I come’”, Hornaday said of the on-track incident. “I just couldn’t catch him after that… I’m glad both of us didn’t wreck.” ron-hornaday

Hornaday managed to hold on for 2nd.

Todd Bodine was 3rd, followed by Brian Ickler and the 2008 Series champion Johnny Benson in 5th.

Austin Dillon, Aric Almirola, Mike Skinner, Ken Schrader and David Starr completed the top-10.
