Cale Gale led only one lap of Friday night's Ford EcoBoost 200 Camping World Truck Series race at Homestead-Miami Speedway but it was the most important one of the race.
The Alabama native scored his first career Truck Series victory after a crash with two laps to go brought out the red flag and set the field up for a green-white-checkered finish.
Rookie Kyle Larson, who led a race-high 48 laps, wrecked with championship contender Ty Dillon in turn four with Dillon one point behind James Buescher for the championship at the time. Buescher finished 13th en route to his first NASCAR title.
Kyle Busch, with Gale alongside, had the point on the final restart and chose the outside lane. Gale restarted on the inside and won the two-lap shootout to the checkered flag by .014 of a second.
“Coming off four that’s not my driving style, but it’s my first chance to taste NASCAR victory lane, and I know it’s Kyle Busch, and I don’t get opportunities like this very often,” Gale said. “I had to take it while I could."
Kyle Busch was unhappy with second after leading 45 laps of the 140 lap race that was advertised to run 134 laps.
Asked by a reporter his thought on the finish of the race Busch responded, "It doesn't matter."
Joey Coulter finished third, followed by Nelson Piquet, Jr. and Miguel Paludo.
Johnny Sauter, Parker Kligerman, Timothy Peters, Justin Lofton and Ross Chastain rounded out the top-10.
Peters finished second in the point race with Coulter third, Dillon fourth and Kligerman fifth.
