Two years after being awarded his first NASCAR Nationwide Series in arguably the strangest scenario in the Series' history, Aric Almirola will finally return to the Milwaukee Mile in hopes of actually taking the checkered flag.
Key Motorsports has confirmed that Almirola will be driving their No. 40 StopRepairBills.com Chevrolet in five races starting this weekend in Milwaukee.
In 2007, Almirola was acting as a substitute driver for Denny Hamln at the Milwaukee Mile because the Sprint Cup Series was racing in Sonoma that same weekend. While Hamlin was in California preparing for the Sprint Cup race, Almirola practiced and qualified the No. 20 Nationwide Series car. In fact, Almirola qualified on the pole. When Hamlin's helicopter was unable to land at the track prior to the start of the race, Hamlin was forced to take the helicopter back to the airport and drive back to the track. By the time he got there, the race was underway with Almirola in the driver's seat. The team decided to swap pilots during an early pit stop and Hamlin went on to win the race. However, NASCAR awarded the victory to Almirola because he was the driver who actually took the initial green flag. Thanks to Key Motorsports, Almirola will get his shot at a second Nationwide Series victory at the Milwaukee Mile, plus he will also be behind the wheel for four other races this season including ORP, Iowa, Richmond and either Bristol or Kansas. Scott Wimmer, the regular pilot of the No. 40 car will be behind the wheel of the No. 5 car for JR Motorsports. Currently, the No. 40 car sits 30th in the owner points, which gives the team a guaranteed starting spot for the race this weekend.
HardcoreRaceFans.com attempted to contact Almirola regarding this situation. Unfortunately he was unavailable for comment. MORE NASCAR NEWS
