On Tuesday NASCAR announced that the sanctioning body has amended the penalty assessed on Bryan Berry. Berry, crew chief of the No. 62 Chevrolet driven by Brendan Gaughan, was suspended following the NASCAR Nationwide Series race due to allegedly using a racial slur directed toward African-American driver Marc Davis (Section 12-1: actions detrimental to stock car racing; involved in an altercation with another team).
During the race at Nashville, Gaughan was heading into his pit and Davis was attempting to turn left through a gap in the wall of pit road. Both cars collided, causing heavy damage to both. Berry and some of the crewman of the No. 62 team went to Davis’ garage, and Berry began yelling through Davis’ window net, and at one point used the “n-word”. Originally being suspended indefinitely, NASCAR altered their initial punishment and elected to lift Berry’s suspension on July 7 and keep him on probation until December 31. In addition, Berry must also carry out community service as structured by NASCAR. MORE NASCAR NEWS
