No Back Flip For Victorious Edwards
Friday, 11 September 2009 21:45

carl-edwardsSince Roush Fenway Racing announced that Carl Edwards broke his right foot last week there has been a lot of speculation about if he should even be driving, let alone pulling double-duty each weekend in both the NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series.

He has answered their questions by getting a win in the Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond International Raceway.

The victory is Edwards’ 24th in the series but there was definitely something missing after he took the checkers.

His signature back flip.

“I really enjoy doing the backflip but I wont be doing that for a while,” he said in Victory Lane.

Despite having a large, clumsy boot on his accelerator foot, Edwards managed to make his way through the pack from his last place starting position. After violating the impound rule after qualifying, he was forced to take his No. 60 Scotts Wild Bird Food Ford to the rear of the field.

Sprint Cup Series drivers Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick dominated the event but during their battle for the top spot Hamlin got loose and the two got into each other. Harvick was able to stay on the track but Hamlin had damage and had to pit. He finished 17th while Harvick managed to finish 2nd to Edwards.kevin-harvick

“All we can ask for is a chance to win and they (the No. 33 team) gave me a chance to win,” Harvick said.

In regards to the altercation with Hamlin, Harvick simply said “no harm, no foul.”

Series points leader Kyle Busch led during the event but came home 3rd. Anything less than a win is disappointing for the Cup driver and he let that be known in his post-race interview.

“All we had was third best… we’ve got some homework to do,” he said.

Brad Keselowski and David Reutimann finished 4th and 5th, respectively. Martin Truex Jr., Trevor Bayne, Justin Allgaier, Steven Wallace and Scott Speed rounded out the top-10.
