Sun Sand And Speed For Nationwide In California

carl-edwardsThere are only six races left in the NASCAR Nationwide Series schedule. As the teams head to sunny SoCal for the Copart 300, championship dreams are diminishing for some.

Carl Edwards is now 245 points behind series points leader Kyle Busch. In last weekend’s race in Kansas, Edwards only finished five spots behind Busch but the sizeable gain in points was devastating.

And it looks to get worse this weekend.

Busch has quite the success record at Auto Club Speedway, as with most tracks these days, and he is going for his third victory in a row at the track this weekend. Edwards has not finished in front of Busch there in over three years, not a good sign if he is trying to gain points this weekend.

In the past seven races in Fontana, Busch has accumulated 1,139 points the most of any other driver.

But, despite Busch’s winning streak, the statistics for him and Edwards at the track really are not that different. In fact, Edwards has one more top-five finish than Busch; the two are tied with seven top-10 finishes a piece.

Edwards has only one win at the track in the Nationwide Series which came back in 2005.

If he has any hope of really challenging Busch for the title, Edwards needs to have a much better run than Busch this weekend.

Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski is gaining on Edwards for 2nd place in the standings. He is only 62 points away.

In 4th place, Jason Leffler is sitting comfortably with a nice cushion on either side of him. He is over 500 points behind Keselowski, while 5th place rookie Justin Allgaier is almost 500 points away from him.

Allgaier and Steven Wallace, currently in 6th, are in a tight battle for that final podium spot at the year end award’s banquet. Wallace is a mere 13 points away from the top-5.

The Copart 300 is scheduled to broadcast on ESPN2 at 4pm ET today.
