The season ending Ford 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday night offered hardcore race fans real racing action complete with lead changes, controversy, a last lap attempt for the win and the crowning of a champion.
Kyle Busch put the icing on his 2009 Nationwide Series championship season, holding off Carl Edwards for the final five laps to win the Ford 300, his ninth victory of the year. "This win here means a lot for Joe Gibbs Racing," said Kyle Busch, who becomes the first driver to win the final race of the year and the championship at Homestead. "It's cool." Carl Edwards made a last lap attempt for the lead after starting eighth on the final restart with eleven laps remaining in the 200 lap event. Edwards made a valiant effort, moving into second place to begin the challenge for the lead with five to go. Edwards finished second to Kyle Busch in both the race as well as in the battle for the Nationwide championship, 210 points behind Busch.
"I wanted to win this race badly," Edwards said. The feud between Denny Hamlin and Brad Keselowski continued at Homestead with Hamlin being black-flagged and held in his pit box for a one lap penalty after spinning Keselowski on lap 35. Hamlin had said recently that he would retaliate against Keselowski and he was true to his word. "I laughed in the car, thought it was funny," Keselowski said after the race. "I don't really hold any grudges. I'm ready to move on, I've already moved on. Hopefully, he feels the same way. I'm not going to go out and wreck him." "I feel great right now," Hamlin said with a smile when asked about the contact with Keselowski. "It was well worth it. I've never seen so many applauding in my entire life." Jeff Burton, Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin completed the top five finishers. MORE NASCAR NEWS
