After a two year crusade with Chevrolet, Rusty Wallace Racing has made the decision to field Toyotas in 2010 to further their push to collect a NASCAR Nationwide Series championship.
After a successful 2009 season, Steve Wallace and Brendan Gaughan will continue to drive for the 1989 Cup Series champion. Steve finished the season 7th in points by consistently finishing strong, accumulating one top-5 and eight top-10 finishes. Gaughan wrapped up his rookie season in the series with three top-5 and eight top-10 finishes propelling him to the second place spot in the 2009 Nationwide Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year contest and a 9th place finish in the overall point standings. "We decided that at the end of the day, our goal as a race team is simple: to win races and championships,” stated team owner Rusty Wallace. “Thus, we all had to take a long look at which manufacturer partner could best help us reach that goal." "Chevrolet has been a great partner for our team and on behalf of RWR, I'd like to thank Pat Suhy, Shane Martin and everyone at GM Racing for their dedication and support. They were a key in our team's growth the past two seasons," he continued. After taking a look at Toyota’s racing shop in North Carolina, Wallace was swayed to believe that Toyota has the best equipment in NASCAR’s second level series. It is also predicted that the team will receive more support from the foreign manufacturer due to the fact that Chevrolet was forced to cutback it’s NASCAR spending after redistributing the companies funds during GM’s financial crisis.
