Justin Allgaier and Carl Edwards coasted to a one-two finish in Saturday night's STP 300 Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway after both drivers ran out of fuel on the final lap.
Edwards dominated by leading 144 laps of the 200-lap event and looked to have the win well in hand until running out of gas at the end of the backstretch. Allgaier passed Edwards through turns three and four as his own tank ran dry and both cars coasted towards the finish line with Trevor Bayne closing fast.
"I wasn't sure if we were going to make it or not," said Allgaier, an Illinois native who scored his first NASCAR win at his home track. "Pretty awesome day."
Bayne ran out of time as he closed in on the leaders and held on for third after starting 31st in the 43-car field.
"We'll take this third place and keep going," said Bayne. "I feel good."
Aric Almirola and Jason Leffler completed the top-five.
Reed Sorenson leads Elliott Sadler by two points in the 2011 Nationwide standings as the series heads to Michigan.
