Michael McDowell dominated Saturday's Bucyrus 200 but it was Reed Sorenson celebrating his first win of 2011 in Road America's Victory Lane after one of the wilder NASCAR Nationwide Series events in recent memory.
McDowell was on the point when the caution was displayed with four laps to go meaning the race would have a green-white-checkered finish. That set off a chain of events that led to a bizarre ending of the 200-mile race.
McDowell led on the restart with Jacques Villeneuve, Brian Scott and Max Papis bringing out the yellow before a lap was completed. McDowell maintained the number one position in the running order.
On the second attempt Justin Allgaier passed McDowell with McDowell spinning as he tried to retake the lead. Just behind the leaders Steve Wallace was involved in a multi-car incident that required the yellow to come out once again.
Allgaier led the field on the final restart as Aric Almirola spun off course and brought out yet another caution after Allgaier took the white flag, which should have made the race official except that Allgaier ran out of fuel before making it back around to the finish line.
Sorenson, running second, slowed when the final caution flew as Ron Fellows, who was in third, blasted past. The pace car picked up Fellows as the leader with Sorenson driving up beside Fellows as they crossed the finish line. NASCAR officials determined Sorenson to be the winner.
"This is the last place I thought I'd ever win, but I'll take it," Sorenson said after posting his fourth career win.
Fellows finished second followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Elliott Sadler and Mike Wallace.
Andrew Ranger, Michael Annett, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., J.R. Fitzpatrick and Timmy Hill finished sixth through 10th, respectively.
Sorenson leads Elliott Sadler in the 2011 Nationwide point standings as the series heads to Daytona.
