The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series make an important stop on the 2009 tour this weekend at the famed Knoxville Raceway, giving drivers and teams one last opportunity to gain an advantage at the Iowa track for the upcoming Knoville Nationals in August.
Donny Schatz is the most recent Knoxville winner, taking top honors at the Outlaws last visit to the half mile. Schatz has won the Knoxville Nationals three times in the past three years and has six wins on half miles this season, including last month's Knoxville victory. He currently has a total of 11 career Knoxville wins on his resume.
“In May, we were in the middle of one the longest victory draughts we've had in a while,” Schatz said recently. “We show up at Knoxville and are the fastest qualifier and win the feature race. It's a huge confidence-builder to know you can come into to a place like Knoxville and get back on top of your game. Hopefully, we'll be able to be in a position to challenge for a win there again this weekend and, obviously, we're shooting for that in August, too.” Danny "The Dude" Lasoski is the winningest driver at Knoxville with 93 carrer wins and a record eight track championships. The 2001 World of Outlaws champion won at Knoxville earlier this season, extending his win streak at the historical speedway to at least one each year for 24 consecutive years. "The Dude" is hot off a win at the Outlaw tours' last stop in North Dakota this past Sunday night.
Joey Saldana is always fast at Knoxville and has three career Outlaw A-Main Feature wins under his belt at the fast track. Saldana leads the 2009 Outlaws Sprint Car Series with ten victories and $144,575 in prize monies. The second generation driver is seeking his first WoO title and currently occupies second position in the championship point standings behind Donny Schatz.
