Local Driver Beats Schatz At Parramatta
Written by Lindsey Marks
Thursday, 31 December 2009 00:00

donny-schatzIan Madsen, a native of Sydney, Austrailia, took the checkered flag and the $10,000 to win in the 30-lap Hogs Breath Café International  at Tyrepower Parramatta City Raceway in Australia on December 30th, defeating World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Donny Schatz.

"I can't believe it. To beat Donny Schatz like that is unbelievable, it is probably the most fun I’ve ever had in a race. I still can't believe it, I'm shaking in the legs and everything," Madsen said.

Schatz powered his way to the front of the field by the half-way point of the race but was unable to overpower Madsen.

"It was a fun night, it obviously not the way I would have liked to have finished but Ian done one hell of a job, you've got to give him credit. He kept plugging away and got exactly what he needed,” Schatz said.tony-stewart

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Tony Stewart, also Schatz’s car owner and a competitor in the event, set the third fastest qualifying time and finished 4th in the event.

"The track was definitely a little difficult tonight, the weather over the last couple of days has really made the track a little trickier than what I'm used to,” Stewart explained. “I'm not used to them being quite as ‘ledgey’ as it was and cars kind of banging the right rear off the cushion, but it makes it fun. You have to work hard at getting into a rhythm and make consistent laps.”

The American drivers will stay in Australia to compete in this weekend’s events at Parramatta including the $50,000 to win Scott Darley Memorial race on Sunday.
