Steve Kinser, the ‘King of the Outlaws’, will no longer be in his trademark bright green No. 11 Quaker State World of Outlaws sprint car this year. Instead, he has signed on to race for NASCAR driver Tony Stewart’s team and will run the No. 11 Bass Pro Shops Maxim in 2010.
It will be the first time in 15 years that Kinser will not be running his own equipment. But, he is basically swapping rides with his son Kraig who raced for Stewart the past two seasons and will no pilot the No. 11K for Steve Kinser Racing.
"We made a little bit of a swap on race cars," Kinser said. "It's something that Tony Stewart Racing and Steve Kinser Racing decided on. Kraig (Kinser) will drive my car and I'll drive the car that he drove for Tony (Stewart) last year. We're trying to make it a win-win situation for Kraig, for myself and for Tony. I think we have a pretty good combination going." It will be a change for the 20-time World of Outlaws champion who is used to paying his own bills. "I am running for Tony Stewart, but I'll still a lot of control over it," Kinser said. "It does take a little bit of the financial burden away from what I was doing before. It's going to be nice to run for Tony Stewart Racing and to get a paycheck. Now all I have to do is get out and win some races to make sure that I get a little bigger paycheck." Kinser will begin his bid for a record 21st championship this weekend at the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals by University of Northwestern Ohio at Volusia Speedway Park.
