World of Outlaws star Cody Darrah was in very high sprits as he spoke with HardcoreRaceFans.com about the passenger car accident that left him with a tibial plateau fracture in his left leg just hours before he was supposed to take the green flag in the first race of his rookie season.
“I sustained a plateau fracture of my tibia right at my knee. It shattered the joint structures in my left knee,” Darrah said. “I’ve had one surgery to put a brace in it and I’ll probably have two more surgeries in the coming weeks.” The 20-year-old driver recently signed with Kasey Kahne Racing and was down in the Sunshine State preparing for the 39th Annual Florida DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park.
“We were going through an intersection and a lady tried to beat the yellow and ended up turning in front of us. It was a head on collision. My father was driving and we were in a rental car,” he explained. “My father is good. He was knocked unconscious at first but he came to with just some small bruises and lacerations.” The accident occurred early in the day on Saturday so he was unable to take the green flag; obviously not the way he had hoped to start out his rookie season. “It’s kind of a bummer deal. It’s not a very good time coming into the first race and for anything to happen like this it’s just a really bad time for it to happen but I’m just glad to be here and glad that my father is ok and just working towards getting better and getting back into a race car.” Luckily, Darrah has had a lot of support over the past few days especially from his new boss, NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kasey Kahne. “He’s been part of the process of getting me to Carolina here and getting me some of the best doctors. They’re the best doctors around that could get me fixed up and get us pointed in the right directions to make this have as small of an amount of complications as we can.” According to SportsInjuryClinic.net, a tibial plateau fracture is considered to be a very serious injury with a long recovery time especially if soft tissue injuries have also been sustained. Because of the severity of the injury, Darrah is unsure of when he may be allowed to race again. “It’s tough to say right now. I’m waiting on the main surgery which probably won’t be for another week or two and then after that its 6 weeks to let my bone heal and then they gotta go back in and do anther surgery to replace and redo all my ligaments.” Darrah maintains a positive attitude about the entire situation but, being a race car driver through and through, he is already itching to be back behind the wheel. “I’m just really over having a broken leg already and I just want to do whatever I have to do to make this as quick as possible and to where I don’t have any problems.” Well, Cody, the hardcore race fans out there are just as anxious to have you back on the track, tearing up the dirt where you belong.
