Jason Meyers scored the 36th World of Outlaws A-Main Feature victory of his career Friday night at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning the Second Annual Las Vegas Super Sprint Classic after an exciting battle with Tony Stewart Racing teammates Steve Kinser and Donny Schatz that went to the wire and thrilled a packed house of hardcore race fans.
Meyers started the 30-lap event from the 18th position, methodically moving his way through the field to take the lead from Donny Schatz on lap 28. Kinser also got around Schatz on the same lap to take second with his sights set on Meyers. Kinser grabbed the lead entering turn three on lap 29 with Meyers powering off four to win the race to the checkers.
"I don't think I have ever won a race from that far back and I don't know when the last time an Outlaws race was won from that far back," said Meyers. "We went out and were trying to get a Top-Five on a night that had kind of gone backwards on us. The guys gave me one heck of a race car and there was a great track tonight. My hat's off to my team." The Las Vegas win is special for Meyers and the GLR Investments team, who are dealing with the loss of their crew chief D.J. Lindsay's father-in-law, Jim Boyd. Boyd was a native of Wisconsin and well known in World of Outlaw racing circles. "We had a lot going in here tonight with the loss of Jim Boyd, a great friend to the team," Meyers continued. "We're going to miss him dearly and this one is for him. We had a lot riding on tonight. D.J.'s wife asked me to go out and win this one tonight and I told her I would do my best. It means a lot and this one is for the entire Boyd family." Steve Kinser held on to finish second, his third podium finish of the 2010 season in as many races. Kinser now leads the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series championship standings by two points over Donny Schatz. "Once I got under Jason (Meyers) I knew he was working the bottom," said Kinser of the last lap battle for the win. "I should have closed the bottom up, though I thought I would have had enough run of a run off (turn) four. I didn't know I would catch that lapped car. He gave it to me and I gave it back to him at the same time." Donny Schatz finished third, Jason Sides fourth and Tim Kaeding fifth. Kasey Kahne Racing driver Joey Saldana was sixth. The next stop on the World of Outlaws Sprint car Series tour will be at the high-banked 1/3-mile Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, California on Friday, March 5.
