The "Steel City Outlaw" Tim Shaffer is the champion of the 50th Annual Goodyear Knoxville Nationals, taking the lead from Donny Schatz on lap 48 of the 50-lap event to earn the $150,000 victory.
"This is just awesome," Shaffer said after scoring the biggest win of his career. "It's a dream I never thought would come true." Sammy Swindell grabbed the lead on lap one from his outside front row starting position and set a blistering pace for most of the race with Donny Schatz riding second. Swindell and Schatz staged a multi-lap battle for the top spot after a lap 44 restart with Swindell exploding a right rear tire and flipping over. Schatz and Shaffer lined up first and second on the final restart with three laps remaining as Shaffer worked his way around Schatz heading to the white flag. "I drove it a little to hard," said Schatz. "It is what it is." Schatz finished second, snapping his streak of four consecutive Knoxville Nationals wins. Shane Stewart completed the podium. Craig Dollansky and Kerry Madsen rounded out the top-five. Connecticut driver David Gravel was named Rookie of the 50th Annual Knoxville Nationals. 50th Annual Knoxville Nationals Results, Saturday, August 14, 2010 1. Tim Shaffer 2. Donny Schatz 3.
