Saldana Captures Finale Of Oil City Cup

joey-saldanaJoey Saldana drove the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 9 World of Outlaws Sprint Car to victory for the 12th time in 2010, winning Saturday night's finale of the Oil City Cup at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

“That was an amazing race,” Saldana said in Victory Lane. “I hope everyone here enjoyed it tonight. I had to really get my elbows up tonight. We had a great car and we had a great car last night and just got caught up in someone else’s mistake. Tonight it showed how good of a car we had. We are doing the best we can and everyone on this team is working hard. We have had no luck this year and sooner or later it’s got to turn around.”

Sam Hafertepe, Jr. started the 35-lap World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-Main Feature from the pole, taking the lead at the drop of the green flag and held off challenges from Jason Meyers and Donny Schatz to stay out front until Saldana got by in turn 4 of lap 30. Schatz passed Hafertepe, Jr. for second with three to go.

“We had a great car,” said Schatz. “The guys did a great job tonight. I just put myself in a bad spot in lapped traffic and let Joey (Saldana) get by us and kind of get away from us. I feel like I had a little better car than him and Sam (Hafertepe Jr.) and was trying to smart and it was tricky in (turns) three and four if you didn’t hit it just right. Second place is where we were tonight.”

Hafertepe, Jr. finished third aboard the Lone Star Speedway Maxim.

“We just got beat fair and square and that’s the name of the game out here,” said Hafertepe. “These guys just ran lapped traffic a little better than I did and that’s the bottom line. I got to them first. I guess I kind of helped the guys behind me out by clearing the path a few times. We’ll come back and see if we can’t get a chance at another one.”

Friday night A-Main Feature winner Jason Meyers finished fourth with Saldana's KKR teammate Paul McMahan taking fifth.

Saldana leaves Canada with a 26-point advantage over Steve Kinser in the 2010 World of Outlaws championship standings.

The next stop on the 2010 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series schedule is at Oregon's Cottage Grove Speedway on Wednesday, September 1.
