Steve Kinser and his son Kraig made fast work of the 24-car starting field in Monday night's World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series A-Main at Cottage Grove Speedway with Kraig beating dad to the line for his first win of 2011.
“This feels so incredibly good to be back in Victory Lane here at Cottage Grove,” said Kraig, who picked up his first career victory at the Cottage Grove Speedway in 2004. “This car was right here in Victory Lane last year so there was quite a bit of expectations going into the night. We ran really good all night and I saw my dad use the top were the track had started to take rubber to get by me. From there, I knew I had to save my right rear so I tried to run as smart as I could and not use it up. We got to lapped traffic and dad had to check up so I had my opening.”
Kraig led the opening eight laps from the pole before Steve, who started fourth, took the point for the next 25 circuits. Kraig made a move in traffic to retake the lead on lap 35 when the caution flag was displayed.
The younger of the legendary Kinser family opted to line up on the outside on the double-file restart and set sail when the race went back to green. Kraig held off his dad for the remaining five laps and collected the $10,000 check for first place.
“I knew we were in a bit of trouble when we had to restart on the bottom,” said Steve Kinser. “The track started taking rubber early on and there at the end, I was really lucky someone let me in the top line and helped us get going again. This is the second time I’ve finished second to Kraig here. I hate finishing second but if I had to lose to anyone, I’m glad it’s my son. Lonnie Parsons and that entire team have been running a whole lot better as of late.”
Craig Dollansky, Jason Sides and Donny Schatz rounded out the top-five.
The 2011 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series tour moves to the Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California for the 58th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions on Friday, September 9, and Saturday, September 10.
