Nineteen-year-old Kyle Larson of Elk Grove, California scored his first career World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series win in the 58th Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway.
“Wow,” Larson said after climbing his #99 machine in Victory Lane. “I would have never dreamed of getting a World of Outlaws win, let alone in a race like this. I’ve been coming to this race since before I even turned a year old and now I’m standing here holding the Gold Cup. This is absolutely surreal and I can’t believe it. I was good until we got to lapped traffic and then it got tricky because I was better on the bottom and sometimes had to go high. Jason (Sides) got close a few times and I knew he would be a challenge. I would like to one day run NASCAR or Indy Cars but the World of Outlaws is where my heart is and I love running these races.”
Larson, who was victorious in the prestigious Belleville Nationals last month, started from the pole and led the entire 40 lap distance on the quarter-mile track in front of a hometown crowd.
Veteran Outlaws competitor Jason Sides finished second.
“Kyle just ran a fantastic race all night long,” said Sides, a four-time winner in 2011. “Lapped traffic was going to be our opportunity to catch up with him and try to pass him but we didn’t get it done. Good night for all of our guys and congratulations to Kyle on a great win.”
Andy Gregg, Jac Haudenschild and Craig Dollansky completed the top five.
The next stop on the 2011 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series schedule is Monday, September 12th at Antioch Speedway in California.
