Donny Schatz won a close battle with Kyle Larson on Night 1 while California native Sean Becker scored his first career World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory on Night 2 of the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway.

Both are locked into Saturday's $20,000-to-win finale at the quarter-mile oval near Chico.

"I grew up watching my dad race at this track in the late '80s, early '90s," Becker said. "I grew up watching Sammy Swindell, Steve Kinser, all these guys. It's a huge accomplishment for me. There's no greater moment right now."

Larson, who started from the pole, led 17 laps of Thursday night's 30-lap A-Main before settling for second to the four-time champ.

"He got about a straightaway out there and then I just started trying to run the heck out of it" said Larson. "I caught him there coming to the white (flag) and got close coming to the line."

Tim Kaeding, Jason Sides and Becker completed the top five.

Friday night's feature saw Larson on the point for 19 laps, again from the pole, until a flat right rear tire left him with a 14th-place finish.

Becker passed Larson on a lap 20 restart then held on the final 10 circuits with fellow Californian Kaeding taking the runner up spot.

"We moved up one spot from last night and hopefully tomorrow we can move up one more," said Kaeding. "California guys have struggled here the last few years, so hopefully we can keep everything rolling and keep the California guys up in the front and having fun these next couple of days out here with the Outlaws."

Joey Saldana finished third, followed by Schatz and Sammy Swindell.

The championship battle has taken a big turn this weekend when Craig Dollansky, leading the standings when the green waved opening night, finished 20th on Thursday, breaking his streak of 16 consecutive top-10 finishes. Dollansky slid to second in the title fight and is 35 points behind Schatz after running 13th in Friday's 30-lap contest.

Swindell is 78 points back in third after a last lap crash Thursday had him 18th in the finishing order.

A stellar field of drivers from every corner of the nation will compete in tonight's 59th annual Gold Cup Race of Champions with racing getting underway at 7:00 p.m. local time.
